Michael Boatwright, 61, woke up with amnesia, calling himself Johan Ek, The Desert Sun reported (http://mydesert.co/145PNGw ).
Boatwright was found unconscious in a Motel 6 room in Palm Springs in February. After police arrived, he was transported to the Desert Regional Medical Center where he woke up.
Hospital officials said Boatwright may have been in town for a tennis tournament in the Coachella Valley. He was found with a duffel bag of exercise clothes, a backpack and tennis rackets. He also carried four forms of identification ? a passport, a California identification card, a veteran's medical card and a Social Security card ? all of which identified him as Michael Thomas Boatwright.
Palm Springs police have documented his information in case anyone lists Boatwright as missing or wanted, authorities said.
In March, doctors diagnosed Boatwright with Transient Global Amnesia, a condition triggered by physical or emotional trauma that can last for several months.
The rare mental disorder is characterized by memory loss, "sudden and unplanned travel," and possible adoption of a new identity, according to the Sun.
After an extensive search, medical personnel and social workers have been unable to locate Boatwright's next of kin.
Authorities are still unsure of his birthplace, listed on his identification as Florida. Photos show him in Sweden at a young age.The Desert Sun (http://mydesert.co/190FGEU ) reported it had located Boatwright's sister in Louisiana but she was unable to shed any light on what had happened to him.
"I haven't talked to him in years. He just disappeared," Michelle Brewer said Monday in a telephone interview.
Brewer estimated she had last spoken to her brother about 10 years ago and couldn't even get in touch with him when their mother died last year.
"He's always been just a wanderer," Brewer said. "Then he'd come back when he needed some money or something from somebody. Then he'd take off again."
Swedish public records show Boatwright lived in the Nordic country on and off between 1981 and 2003. Several Swedes on Tuesday said they knew of him as an American with a big interest in medieval history and jousting.
Swede Olof Sahlin said he met Boatwright around 1985 through their joint interest in medieval history. He said he saw the American at jousting events regularly in the 1980s and sporadically in the early 1990s.
"He was nice, sympathetic and talented at fighting in plate armor," Sahlin told The Associated Press. "A little bit reserved maybe."
Sahlin said he never knew how Boatwright made a living during his time in Sweden but has now heard from other friends that he briefly worked as a personal assistant and in the construction sector.
Sahlin said their last contact was in 1999 and he doesn't know what happened to him after that.
Boatwright doesn't recall how to exchange money, take public transportation or seek temporary housing like homeless shelters or hotels, the social worker assigned to his case, Lisa Hunt-Vasquez, told the Sun.
He doesn't remember his son and two ex-wives, either.
He has no income or insurance, further complicating his treatment at Desert Regional. And he has little money he can access ? only $180. He also has a few Chinese bank accounts but can only access one account, which holds $7, according to the newspaper.
Doctors don't know how much longer he will be able to stay at the center. Aside from his amnesia, Boatwright is in good health. The hospital is currently looking for alternatives that would keep him off the streets. For now, Boatwright is unsure of both his past and his future.
"Sometimes it makes me really sad and sometimes it just makes me furious about the whole situation and the fact that I don't know anybody, I don't recognize anybody," Boatwright told the newspaper.
Last year, a North Dakota college student who disappeared for nearly a week before turning up in Arizona said she had a bout of amnesia and didn't know who she was.
Amber Glatt, 22, a Valley City State University student, vanished on the Fourth of July, prompting aerial searches. She contacted her mother five days later from the Grand Canyon. Her mother said Glatt has had recurring amnesia since suffering a head injury years ago.
Glatt told WDAY-TV (http://bit.ly/NmbSnR) that after she lost her memory she met a man in a bar who let her tag along on his trip to the Grand Canyon. She said the man eventually saw online that she'd been reported missing and alerted her.
Glatt regained most of her memory.

Cory Monteith's final story line on "Glee" could give producers room to address his sudden death.
The sudden death of ?Glee? star Corey Monteith has placed the musical drama into a rare category of television shows: one that has to cope with the real-life death of a major character.
?Dallas? star Larry Hagman died in November of complications from his battle with cancer during filming for the second season of TNT?s reboot of the classic. The show responded by killing off his character, J.R. Ewing, and taped an emotional funeral scene that aired in March.
Another notable death was that of John Ritter, who died suddenly from an aortic dissection in 2003. Ritter was the lead actor on ?8 Simple Rules" when he passed away. After a month-long hiatus, the sitcom came back with a one-hour tribute to the character, who died after collapsing in a grocery store while getting milk.
What sets Fox's ?Glee? apart from other shows before it is that Monteith?s final episode allows for a plausible story line about why his character, lovable jock Finn Hudson, may not appear again in his hometown of Lima, Ohio, when "Glee" kicks off season five this fall.
Monteith?s final episode, which aired April 18, focused on Finn and Puck partying like typical college students at the University of Lima. At one point, Finn said, ?I have the rest of my life to be a grown-up and for now, it?s OK to have fun.?
The episode ended with a repentant Finn taking Matthew Morrison?s Mr. Schuester up on his offer to help coach McKinley High?s glee club for college credit. This means the show?s producers have an opportunity to explain why that won?t happen when the show returns on Sept. 19. Much like the powerful anti-driving-while-texting episode where Quinn (Dianna Agron) almost died, the show has an opportunity to explore the hazards of drugs and alcohol.
The coroner?s preliminary findings, released on Tuesday, cited Monteith?s cause of death as ?a mixed drug toxicity, involving heroin and alcohol.? According to the National Institutes of Heath, an estimated 1,825 college students die in alcohol-related deaths each year.
Fans are also hoping the Fox drama takes this opportunity to spread an important message.
"I really do hope 'Glee' decides to address (this) on the show," Alicia McCullough wrote on NBCNews.com's Facebook page. "Many teenagers can learn from this tragedy, and I know he'd want that."
There has been no word from the producers of "Glee" about exact plans for handling Monteith's death. Neither "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy nor Fox has responded to requests for comment.
One thing is for sure: ?Glee? has never shied away from controversy or ripped-from-the-headlines story lines. In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Newtown, Conn., the show devoted a riveting episode to a school shooting that also touched on the issues of bullying and gun control. There was also a recent arc about ?catfishing,? which had ties to the Manti Te?o headlines that so gripped fans and non-fans of football. The musical drama has also handled other difficult subjects, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, molestation and even the idea of Britney Spears as a role model.
This coming season, most of the original cast has stepped down -- including Heather Morris, Mark Salling and Amber Riley, among others -- to make way for the new talent as the original cast moves on from high school.
According to a source with close ties to "Glee," Monteith's character was to have a major presence in the show's first episodes of the new season. It?s now uncertain as to how producers will proceed as they grapple with how to do justice to the passing of a beloved colleague.
It?s inconceivable given this tragic loss of a talented young man, that the producers would not take the time to make sure his life was given its due.

The company sent out invitations Thursday to technology journalists in the US inviting them to company headquarters on that day for a ?special unveiling? by the Xbox team.
According to Microsoft, the system will ?mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment.? It also said it would show off a few new titles at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June.
Microsoft released the current console, the Xbox 360, seven years ago, and it has since overtaken both the Sony Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii to become the world?s best-selling video game machine.
However the industry is facing significant challenges from the spread of casual gaming on smartphones and tablet computers, while the rise of smart TV devices will also challenge the aspirations of video console companies for their machines to act as the digital household hub.

Motorcycle crashes at 285 mph? A motorcycle racer trying to top 300?mph?died Sunday after losing control of his motorcycyle at the long-closed Loring Air Force Base?in Maine.

Bill Warner, 44, of Wimauma, Fla., was clocked at?285?mph?before he lost control but it was unclear how fast the motorcycle was traveling when it veered off the paved runway and crashed, said Tim Kelly, race director the Loring Timing Association, which hosted "The Maine Event" at Loring Air Force Base.
Warner was conscious and talking after the crash just before 10 a.m., Kelly said, but he died about an hour and 15 minutes later at a hospital in Caribou.
"No one will touch Bill's achievements or be the type of racer he was. He was a personal friend and the land-racing community is less for his loss," Kelly said.
Riding his modified turbocharged Suzuki Hayabusa, Warner previously hit 311?mph?on the same course in 2011, using 1.5 miles of pavement. That's considered to be the world land speed record for a conventional motorcycle, Kelly said.
This time he was trying to hit 300?mph?using just a mile of pavement, and he'd made several passes before the one in which he crashed, Kelly said.
The Maine Event is an annual timed speed event that utilizes the 14,200-foot-long runway at the former Strategic Air Command base that closed in 1994. The Loring Timing Association uses 2.5 miles of the runway for its events, and there's an additional buffer of 2,000 feet, Kelly said.
On Sunday, about 400 spectators watched as Warner began veering right after passing the 1-mile mark, traveling upright for another 2,000 feet before exiting the runway and crashing, Kelly said.
The remainder of Sunday's event was canceled. The Limestone Police Department and Maine State Police were investigating the crash.

Japanese artist Hokusai liked Mt. Fuji. Really liked it. So in the 1820s and 1830s, he made a series of 36 woodblock prints of the mountain, from near and far, in summer and winter. When they went over well, he made 10 more scenes. Then, because an artist must follow his muse, he started a new series: 100 views of Mt. Fuji.
When I?m looking at Half Dome, the great granite hood ornament of Yosemite National Park, I understand Hokusai and Fuji. You see Half Dome on a century?s worth of postcards, on Ansel Adams prints and Sierra Club calendars, on your waiter?s name tag at the Wawona Hotel, on the new California driver?s licenses.
Yet to me, it seems inexhaustible.
When I visited Yosemite with photographer Mark Boster in late May, we glanced at a few other popular spots, but mostly we chased Half Dome variations. Though we didn?t summit the big rock?the climbing cables weren?t in place for the season?we saw it from so many directions and elevations that I started thinking of it as the third member of our traveling party.
Some people say Half Dome looks like a football helmet or a broken bowling ball. I always saw a dented ranger?s hat. Until this trip.
For a proper introduction or a ritual re-introduction, a traveler heads from the park?s south entrance to the Tunnel View turnout. You may find yourself standing in a crowd?on a busy day, 5,000 people pause here?but you?ll spot Half Dome, bracketed by El Capitan to the left, Cathedral Rocks and Bridalveil Fall to the right. And if the crowds are thin, you may think: This is the place. No view can match this. But just up the road, plenty can.
Bob Roney, author of ?The Road Guide to Yosemite? and a ranger here for 40-plus years, met us at Tunnel View to explain how a work crew in the early 1930s spent months creating a shortcut for travelers, using a ton of blasting powder daily to make about 20 feet of progress.
Eventually, they had the Wawona Tunnel, nearly a mile long, and a small mountain of tailings at its east end. And somebody realized that the new mound had a big view.
Naturally, it didn?t take long after the tunnel?s 1933 opening for Ansel Adams to turn up with his tripod. Before long, Tunnel View was the iconic Yosemite view. It scarcely changed for 75 years, until a 2008 upgrade that smoothed traffic flow and opened up the view by cutting down a bunch of trees. Yes, the park service does that sometimes.
Still, Roney reminded us, no panorama is permanent, especially in a park that records dozens of rockfalls every year. ?Sure as time moves forward,? Roney said, ?this view will be wrecked by some other geologic event,? perhaps transformed ?into something even more beautiful.?
And so to Mirror Lake, which is really a seasonal water hole a mile?s walk from the Mirror Lake shuttle-bus stop. In spring, if kids aren?t splashing, the still water gives you a perfect reflection of shapely Mt. Watkins to the north. The view is so mesmerizing, in fact, that you might not realize the stone wall just east of you is the base of Half Dome.
And it was near here, at 5:26 a.m. on March 28, 2009, that 115,000 tons of boulders and debris rained down from Ahwiyah Point, 1,800 feet up, near Half Dome. The impact generated a blast of air that leveled hundreds of trees up to 50 yards away. Nobody was hurt. But rockfalls (both naturally occurring and human-caused) occasionally do kill people in Yosemite. Falling rocks dislodged by climbers killed one El Capitan climber on May 20, another on June 2.
I soaked my feet in the shallows, listening for distant rumbles. Then Mark and I headed for the high country.
At Olmsted Point, along Tioga Road, we found a rock scape scoured by ancient ice and peppered with ?erratics,? stray boulders nudged into strange places by glacial advances. From there, Half Dome is a far-off rounded lump that sometimes glows red at sunset. For us it turned a faint orange.
Another day, we drove to Glacier Point, which is only 7,214 feet above sea level but feels like the roof of the Earth, with jaw-dropping views of the valley. From there you seem to be even with Half Dome (though you?re really 1,600 feet below it), and the spectacle is an invitation to consider eternity and forget petty human affairs.
But then you?d miss the hooded photographer fussing with his 8-by-10 camera, or the British tourist dropping to one knee and proposing to his girlfriend (who says yes), or the guy who is about to throw a pebble into the abyss until a second guy threatens to throw him instead.
It got quieter when the sun dipped and set the dome aglow. Then the moon and stars took over. We stayed for hours.
But that?s not the view that destroyed my ranger?s-hat idea of Half Dome. It was Washburn Point, less than a mile from Glacier Point, that did it.
There, as at Glacier Point, you are reminded how puny Yosemite Valley is: 7 miles long and a mile wide, surrounded by nearly 1,200 more square miles of rugged high-country parkland. But Washburn Point also has a different angle on Half Dome, an angle that shows it isn?t a dome at all. To my eyes, it?s a thick, uneven slice of bread, maybe the heel of the loaf. Of course, it?s epic and all that, but you?d never make it your logo.
The Half Dome we love is the well-rounded idea of Half Dome, as seen from the valley, Olmsted Point and Glacier Point. Seeing its unrounded backside is like being told that Humphrey Bogart never said, ?Play it again, Sam? in ?Casablanca.? Part of you doesn?t want to know. And the other part figures that?s a good reason to watch the movie again.
Hiking Half Dome: what you need
To hike Half Dome, you need a clear, summery day, a permit, strong legs, strong lungs, food, water, a flashlight and a plan.
A few things you need in order to hike Half Dome:
? A clear, summery day. Because hiking Half Dome can be dangerous, the park service strongly discourages hiking it in the rain, when there are storm clouds or any time but in summer. Rangers say five hikers have died on the trail in the last decade, most losing their footing, often in the rain. To make things easier for hikers in the summer months, rangers put up removable steel cables just before Memorial Day most years to help climbers ascend the last 400 feet to the top. The cables come down around Columbus Day (in October).
? A permit from the National Park Service. To keep the trail from clogging with traffic when the cables are up, rangers require that you have a permit, and they set a limit of 300 hikers a day. Fees are $12.50 (if you apply online) or $14.50 (by phone). Check the Yosemite website at www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/hdpermits.htm.

The Anderson Silva-Chris Weidman rematch is on. As mentioned on Cagewriter Saturday, the pair who fought just last week will rematch on Dec. 28. Silva will be in a new position -- fighting as the challenger instead of the champion. Still, he wanted to make one thing clear: he's back.
Watching what kind of Silva comes back to fight Weidman will be one of the most interesting stories in not just MMA, but in sports. The man's last loss was in the last decade, and what worked for him so many times before didn't against Weidman. UFC 168 cannot come quickly enough.

No stranger to Twitter feuds, Azealia Banks has racked up a list of enemies on the social media site. Among them Rita Ora, whom Banks called "Rita Oral" in a tweet; Angel Haze, who then took the beef to her music, and now British singer Lily Allen.
The feud started earlier in the week when Allen, also very vocal, called Banks a "one hit wonder." In the same exchange Banks dubbed Allen a coke addict and called her kids "ugly." Banks added: "One hit, but am certainly NOT a wonder. Just played for 70k at glasto, critics STILL eagerly anticipating my debut. Suck on that hoe!"
Allen responded a couple days later with a picture of herself on the Glastonbury main stage in 2009 with the caption: "Last time i played glasto, hoe. "
Banks was quick to note that she didn't mind the new publicity. "Lily Allen is promoting the fuck out of Azealia Banks right now," she tweeted.
Allen then put Banks' long-delayed debut on blast.
Banks' comeback went a little like this:
Banks ended things with an "Ugh, bitch bye" and posted an unflattering photo of Allen taken by paparazzi.
Guess a collaboration is unlikely.

PARIS (Reuters) - A body found in northern Mali is likely to be that of French geologist Philippe Verdon, taken hostage in November 2011, France's Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.
President Francois Hollande had said in his Bastille Day speech on Sunday that it was possible Verdon had died several weeks ago but his death was not officially confirmed.
"There is a very strong chance that the body found recently in northern Mali is unfortunately that of our compatriot Philippe Verdon," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that further checks were being made.
Citing an unnamed source, Radio France Internationale said earlier on Sunday that DNA checks had shown that the body found in the north of Mali was that of Verdon and it would be repatriated to France within days.
Al Qaeda's arm in the Islamic Maghreb said in March it had beheaded Verdon in response to France's military intervention in Mali.
Hollande justified the intervention partly by saying it would prevent northern Mali being used as a launchpad for Islamist militant attacks in Africa and in the West.

When Iman Shumpert wasn't working his way back from a torn ACL last summer, he was honing his craft inside the recording booth.
Shumpert's summer was clearly productive. His athleticism wasn't always there, but he flashed some of that suffocating defense that New York Knicks fans were used to seeing along with a suddenly lethal three-point stroke (40.2 percent).
When Shumpert, or 2wo 1ne rather, dropped his debut mixtape "The #Post90s" in December, he effectively buried the other rap hopefuls flooding the NBA ranks.
If Friday was any indication, his 2013 summer output isn't going to be nearly as generous.
A rare third-year NBA starter serving in the summer league ranks, he stood out from the crowd for more than just his trademark flat-top.
Unfortunately, he would've preferred it if the fans had focused on his hair. Instead, analysts were left to wonder what they'd just seen after he labored through an 0-of-5, two-point, four-turnover night. The Knicks were outscored by 17 points during his 27-minute run, the worst plus/minus rating for any of the game's participants.
Even worse, he wasn't the only Knick?who had a rough day at the office.
Tim Hardaway, Jr., New York's first-round pick, missed eight shots from the field and five of his six three-point attempts. C.J. Leslie, an undrafted free agent who inked a partially guaranteed one-year contract with New York, shot just 2-of-9 from the floor.

Heat indexes it and you can then go in search that information just like if you on Google the difference of course is it's all of your private information.
All right so.
OK so finally on FaceBook which I am what can people find out about me personally that maybe I didn't want them to -- OK so by default everything is set basically to share with everyone -- with public if you haven't gone in and marked.
-- specific post or tagged photo or video or -- -- week.
As only sharing with your friends -- shared with everybody and therefore it's open to -- search which is just another name for -- search engine.
And Google and sorry FaceBook has the right to share that publicly.
-- -- -- listen this new thing I've got to think people are gonna complain about it do you think they're going to be able to keep it.
You know there's no doubt that they're gonna keep that people will complain like we we tend to always do with FaceBook and unless we -- -- huge signing up.
We shouldn't forget about it after a week and they go on and it's you know it's their business model Jerry I mean.
This is how they make money is by aggregating your personal information and selling it to others.
I now I find that it deeply annoying OK I think your your -- -- -- do you have some sense suggestions and tips for people who -- -- keep this -- private.
You say share with care what does that mean.
That just means if if you put it up on FaceBook you better be darn ready to have -- shared publicly because that's essentially what you're doing even.
If you have all your settings set up somebody else can share that data and and it can be totally public.
-- read the data -- policy how does that help me.
Oh my gosh it's such an eye opening thing like -- my my daughters do that and you can't believe what you find out about what FaceBook sharing it's just.
Totally revealing about the information you're getting way on there.
Customize privacy settings you talked about that a little bit before but remind people in -- -- because I think this is critical you don't want this information out there I don't think.
No you don't infect you wanna lock it down from the start and we've put a video up on our blog about how to go about -- you go up to that.
That -- setting on the right hand side and you come down you changed three -- four things that are really crucial so that you're not automatically sharing everything in the future or even in the.
Past and we're showing a picture that right now.
While John thanks for coming on and warning us about this that will keep an eye and it appreciate your time have a great weekend.
Thanks so much YouTube.

DETROIT (AP) ? For the first time in over nine months, Max Scherzer stood in front of his locker as the losing pitcher, trying to explain what went wrong.
"I threw some good pitches, they hit it. I threw some bad pitches, they hit it even farther," the Detroit right-hander said. "It's a loss. That's what happens when you don't quite pitch as well."
Scherzer allowed four runs in the middle innings, and for once, the AL Central-leading Tigers didn't back him with much offensive support, falling to the Texas Rangers 7-1 Saturday night. It was Scherzer's first defeat since Sept. 23. In between, he went 22 starts ? 19 in the regular season and three in the postseason ? without a loss.
Scherzer (13-1) was trying to become the first pitcher in the majors to start 14-0 since Roger Clemens in 1986. He allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings, walking two and striking out six.
The defeat came in his final start before the All-Star game ? he could start the event next Tuesday night at Citi Field in New York.
"He probably wasn't as dominant, but he still gave us a chance to win and kept us close," outfielder Torii Hunter said. "We just couldn't get any run support for him. Tonight, we failed him."
Mitch Moreland's two-run homer in the fourth gave Texas a 3-0 lead, and Derek Holland (8-4) was sharp for the Rangers. He allowed a run and five hits in seven innings.
Adrian Beltre added a two-run homer in a three-run ninth for Texas.
Scherzer entered the day leading the majors in run support, and that was no small reason for his unblemished record. He struck out three in the first.
Jurickson Profar's line drive in the second caught Scherzer in the left wrist, and he showed reporters his bruised non-throwing arm afterward. The Detroit pitcher threw to first to retire Profar and was able to keep going.
"Right on the bone," he said. "Obviously it wasn't broken but it just affected how ? you never realize how much you use your glove to pull through with your body. I was still able to pitch and pitch effectively and hit my spots, but it changed kind of how my mechanics worked."
The Rangers finally put his streak in jeopardy in the fourth.
Nelson Cruz led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by A.J. Pierzynski. Scherzer then walked Elvis Andrus, and that came back to haunt him when Moreland lifted a drive to left-center for his 13th homer of the season.
Hernan Perez hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, but Pierzynski's RBI bloop double in the fifth made it 4-1.
Scherzer did extend one streak. He's struck out at least six hitters in all 19 starts this year. When he walked off the mound after the third out of the sixth, a few fans behind the Detroit dugout gave him a nice ovation, presumably sensing his night was done.
Scherzer threw a season-high 122 pitches.
Holland, meanwhile, lowered his ERA to 3.08, which is actually better than Scherzer's mark of 3.19. Holland started the Rangers' 11-8 victory over Detroit on May 19, allowing two of Miguel Cabrera's three homers in that game. He kept the Tigers quiet Saturday in front of a sellout crowd of 44,061 at Comerica Park.
Holland walked five and struck out seven.
"Scherzer was 13-0 for a reason. He's got great stuff," Holland said. "Today I made pitches when I needed to and I thought my defense did a great job making plays and saving me. It's up there with the big games this year."
Texas starters are only 10-13 since the beginning of June, even after Holland's solid performance.
Detroit's rotation, meanwhile, has been among the best in the game ? and Scherzer has certainly contributed his share. He's a big part of the Tigers' efforts to win their third straight division title.
"I believe in my talents and I believe going forward that I'm going to put together other streaks as well," Scherzer said.
NOTES: Ian Kinsler set a Rangers' record with his 162nd career steal, breaking a tie with Bump Wills. ... Detroit's Victor Martinez left the bases loaded with a third-inning strikeout and had his hitting streak snapped at 14 games. ... Tigers ace Justin Verlander (9-6) starts Sunday against Texas LHP Martin Perez (3-1).

A lot of questions arise when it comes to CA workmans comp insurance. Employers are sometimes unsure whether to get a policy or not especially those that have small operations. The rule of thumb is that every employee must be covered unless the only ones working for the company are the owners themselves as in a partnership or a company with officials being the sole stockholders. The partners and the corporate officers in this case may still get coverage for themselves but it will be at their own discretion.
It is considered as part of the cost of doing business in the state so the employees cannot be asked to contribute to the fund. In essence it is a compromise agreement wherein employers take care of their injured workers to avoid potentially costly suits. If a business hires even one employee then CA workmans comp insurance comes into play. This is true whether the status is full-time or part-time. Even temporary helpers like during the holiday season are entitled to coverage. Gray areas should be discussed with a lawyer or insurance agent.
The California Department of Insurance website has a list of authorized providers in the state. Employers can browse this list and ask for quotes from several brokers for comparison. Shopping around is the key to finding a good price. However do not focus solely in the cost as other things should be taken into consideration like accessibility service level familiarity with the industry medical network competence and more. Members of local trade groups can ask for assistance from the organization so that they can get a good deal both in price and in benefits.
Be aware that the rates are unregulated so they can vary quite a bit. The annual premium will depend on several factors including the company?s record of work-related injuries the industry it operates in the payroll special concerns and available discounts. Employers must study all their options carefully to get the best possible arrangement. It would be best to go over the legal requirements and the insurance choices with a competent lawyer to avoid any misstep.

(Reuters) - Billionaire investor Carl Icahn promised Dell Inc shareholders that the company would buy back up to $16 billion of stock if they join his campaign to stop the computer maker from going private.
Time is running out for Icahn. Next month, the company's shareholders will vote on whether to accept a $24.4 billion bid from the company's founder, Michael Dell, and private equity firm Silver Lake, and so far shareholders' reaction to two of Icahn's proposals has been mixed.
Icahn has said repeatedly that Michael Dell's bid undervalues the company. In an open letter on Tuesday, Icahn gave his latest proposal to shareholders, asking them to vote in new directors who would in turn approve Dell buying back stock at $14 a share. Dell and Silver Lake are bidding $13.65 a share.
Southeastern, which had been the company's largest independent shareholders, sold nearly $1 billion of its Dell shares to Icahn at $13.52 apiece, making him the company's largest external investor. Southeastern and Icahn, which together hold about 13 percent of Dell's shares, had agreed not to sell their shares in the tender offer, Icahn wrote in his letter.
Dell could fund a tender offer with $5.2 billion of debt financing, $7.5 billion in cash available at Dell and $2.9 billion available through a sale of Dell receivables, leaving around $4.9 billion of cash available for ongoing Dell operations, Icahn wrote.
Icahn's battle with the world's No. 3 PC maker has been acrimonious and protracted.
Dell suffered as the global PC industry has slowed. Michael Dell and the company's executives have argued that there is little future in PCs and the computer maker needs to transform itself into an IBM-like technology consultant for large companies - a makeover best done as a private company. Icahn, Southeastern, and other major investors say Dell's plan shortchanges stockholders and benefits mainly Michael Dell, who started the company from his college dorm in the 1980's.
A presentation by Dell's special committee on June 5 challenged Icahn, saying the activist investor is almost $4 billion short of the cash needed to fund his proposal for a $12-per-share special dividend.
But Icahn said on Tuesday that a major investment bank had indicated its willingness to make available $1.6 billion and that Icahn and his affiliates would provide $2 billion if necessary.
Icahn told cable television network CNBC on May 10 that investment bank Jefferies would contribute to the bridge loan needed to finance his deal.
By the reckoning of the board's special committee, Icahn's prior proposal did not factor in Dell's debt service, expected cash flow shortfalls and various termination and other fees related to the Michael Dell/Silver Lake deal.
In May, Icahn and Southeastern had proposed a deal that would gives shareholders $12 of cash for every share they own, and allow them to keep their stock. In March, Icahn offered $15 per share for 58 percent of Dell.

You might be surprised to hear that many current aircraft already have the ability to print documents at 30,000 feet. Long-haul airliners like the Boeing Dreamliner and Airbus A340 ship with a ToughWriter flight deck printer installed and ready to go, but the device has been limited to black and white output, which can be a bit restrictive when it comes to spitting out charts and weather information. Astro-Med, the company behind the cockpit printer currently churning out reports in thousands of commercial, business and military planes, has a spiffy new model on the way. We spotted an early prototype on display at the Paris Air Show this week, and while it's still a ways off from being cockpit-ready, the device works quite well, printing to ZINK paper at about 30 seconds per page, compared to 5 seconds for the monochrome version.
Unlike the printers we're accustomed to using on the ground, a ToughWriter must be installed before an aircraft is certified, so it's really something you need to factor in before the FAA signs off on your plane. In other words, don't expect to simply swap in this new color model once it hits the market. It's also an expensive acquisition -- it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect pricing in the $25,000 range, though that detail has yet to be announced. The version we saw in Paris is very much a work in progress -- it far exceeds the maximum size allowed, and it's heavier than the targeted 10 pounds, too. It does print quite nicely, though, and once engineers manage to squeeze the printer into a smaller housing, it'll likely include AirPrint so pilots can print from their iPads, and possibly Android wireless support, too. Astro-Med reps weren't able to tell us when the color ToughWriter will take to the skies, and considering the certification involved, it could be a few years out. Catch it in action in the gallery below.

In Alaska, houses are built to keep warm air in and cold air out, not the other way around. So with a record-setting heat wave scorching the state, residents are sweltering amidst temperatures soaring past 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius).
Southcentral Alaska hit four all-time highs yesterday (June 17), ranging between 88 F (31 C) in Seward to 94 F (34 C) in Talkeetna, according to the National Weather Service's Alaska forecast office. In the southeastern portion of the state, Skagway, a popular cruise ship port-of-call, reached 83 F (28 C), almost as warm as St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. Just about every part of the state was warmer than average yesterday, the NWS said.
The blazing hot temperatures are just the latest records to fall this year in Alaska. Residents also endured history-making cold temperatures throughout spring and flooding and evacuations caused by the never-ending winter. A mass of Arctic air stuck over the state for weeks this spring was responsible for the chilly weather. It finally fell prey to the warming effects of 18 hours of sunlight at the end of May. [The 9 Hottest Places on Earth]
"Eventually, the sun is going to win out, and once it did, boy, did things change in a hurry," said Michael Lawson, a meteorologist with the NWS Alaska forecast office in Anchorage.
Marine layer loses
While Interior Alaska and towns near the Alaska Range regularly see high temperatures in the summer, extreme heat rarely flares up in Alaska's coastal communities, which are cooled by marine breezes. But a high-pressure ridge parked over Southcentral Alaska is pushing refreshing afternoon sea breezes offshore.
A similar predicament often develops in Southern California, when a high-pressure system keeps the Catalina Eddy offshore, firing up heat waves in beach towns that depend on fog and ocean air for natural air-conditioning.
"It's really much rarer for places in Southcentral Alaska to get as hot as they've been getting," Lawson told LiveScience. "This ridge has been so strong the sea breeze hasn't been getting a chance to cool us down."
The heat wave will continue for the rest of the week, the NWS forecasts. The unusually strong, high-pressure system is intensifying over mainland Alaska, continuing the heat wave. Interior and Southwest Alaska will reach upwards of 90 F (32 C), and Southeast and Southcentral Alaska will see highs in the upper 70s and 80s F (between about 21 and 26 C).
A year without a spring
Yet just a month ago, Alaska was in the grips of a never-ending winter, with late-season snowstorms and record-low temperatures in mid-May. The wild weather swing has wreaked havoc on the annual ice melt along rivers, causing ice jams and flooding. The town of Galena was evacuated late last month due to flooding from an ice dam on the mighty Yukon River. The Nenana Ice Classic, a betting contest on the Nenana River's ice breakup, set a record for the latest-ever crack and cave in of the ice.
"It was an incredibly rapid transition," Lawson told LiveScience. "Literally, our spring was about five days before we jumped into summer-type weather."
A persistent low-pressure trough that remained stuck over the state brought wave after wave of cold Arctic air into Alaska, Lawson said, keeping temperatures lower than normal for most of the winter.
This week's warm weather could bring more flooding from melting snow and ice at higher elevations, the NWS has warned. A red flag fire warning, which signals dangerously dry air and possible strong winds, was also issued over the weekend for much of the state because of drier conditions caused by the hot air mass. A forest fire broke out east of Fairbanks on Monday evening (June 17), prompting temporary road closures. A 30,000-acre fire is also burning in Southwest Alaska.
The highest temperature ever recorded in Alaska was 100 F (37 C) in Ft. Yukon on June 27, 1915.

June 18, 2013 ? Researchers conclude in a new report that a global push for small hydropower projects, supported by various nations and also the Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, may cause unanticipated and potentially significant losses of habitat and biodiversity.
An underlying assumption that small hydropower systems pose fewer ecological concerns than large dams is not universally valid, scientists said in the report. A five-year study, one of the first of its type, concluded that for certain environmental impacts the cumulative damage caused by small dams is worse than their larger counterparts.
The findings were reported by scientists from Oregon State University in the journal Water Resources Research, in work supported by the National Science Foundation.
The conclusions were based on studies of the Nu River system in China but are relevant to national energy policies in many nations or regions -- India, Turkey, Latin America -- that seek to expand hydroelectric power generation. Hydropower is generally favored over coal in many developing areas because it uses a renewable resource and does not contribute to global warming. Also, the social and environmental problems caused by large dam projects have resulted in a recent trend toward increased construction of small dams.
"The Kyoto Protocol, under Clean Development Mechanism, is funding the construction of some of these small hydroelectric projects, with the goal of creating renewable energy that's not based on fossil fuels," said Desiree Tullos, an associate professor in the OSU Department of Biological and Ecological Engineering.
"The energy may be renewable, but this research raises serious questions about whether or not the overall process is sustainable," Tullos said.
"There is damage to streams, fisheries, wildlife, threatened species and communities," she said. "Furthermore, the projects are often located in areas where poverty and illiteracy are high. The benefit to these local people is not always clear, as some of the small hydropower stations are connected to the national grid, indicating that the electricity is being sent outside of the local region.
"The result can be profound and unrecognized impacts."
This study was one of the first of its type to look at the complete range of impacts caused by multiple, small hydroelectric projects, both in a biophysical, ecological and geopolitical basis, and compare them to large dam projects. It focused on the remote Nu River in China's Yunnan Province, where many small dams producing 50 megawatts of power or less are built on tributaries that fall rapidly out of steep mountains. There are already 750,000 dams in China and about one new dam is being built every day, researchers say.
Among the findings of the report as it relates to this region of China:
"One of the things we found generally with small dams is that there was much less oversight and governance with the construction, operation and monitoring of small hydropower," Tullos said. "On the large, main stem dams, people pay attention to what's going on. On a small hydropower project, no one notices if minimum flows are being maintained. Or if a pump breaks, the hydropower station might sit idle for long periods of time."
Researchers said the key finding of the research, contrary to prevailing but unvalidated belief, is that "biophysical impacts of small hydropower may exceed those of large hydropower, particular with regard to habitat and hydrologic change."
