Icahn seeks Dell share buyback, buys Southeastern stock

(Reuters) - Billionaire investor Carl Icahn promised Dell Inc shareholders that the company would buy back up to $16 billion of stock if they join his campaign to stop the computer maker from going private.

Time is running out for Icahn. Next month, the company's shareholders will vote on whether to accept a $24.4 billion bid from the company's founder, Michael Dell, and private equity firm Silver Lake, and so far shareholders' reaction to two of Icahn's proposals has been mixed.

Icahn has said repeatedly that Michael Dell's bid undervalues the company. In an open letter on Tuesday, Icahn gave his latest proposal to shareholders, asking them to vote in new directors who would in turn approve Dell buying back stock at $14 a share. Dell and Silver Lake are bidding $13.65 a share.

Southeastern, which had been the company's largest independent shareholders, sold nearly $1 billion of its Dell shares to Icahn at $13.52 apiece, making him the company's largest external investor. Southeastern and Icahn, which together hold about 13 percent of Dell's shares, had agreed not to sell their shares in the tender offer, Icahn wrote in his letter.

Dell could fund a tender offer with $5.2 billion of debt financing, $7.5 billion in cash available at Dell and $2.9 billion available through a sale of Dell receivables, leaving around $4.9 billion of cash available for ongoing Dell operations, Icahn wrote.

Icahn's battle with the world's No. 3 PC maker has been acrimonious and protracted.

Dell suffered as the global PC industry has slowed. Michael Dell and the company's executives have argued that there is little future in PCs and the computer maker needs to transform itself into an IBM-like technology consultant for large companies - a makeover best done as a private company. Icahn, Southeastern, and other major investors say Dell's plan shortchanges stockholders and benefits mainly Michael Dell, who started the company from his college dorm in the 1980's.

A presentation by Dell's special committee on June 5 challenged Icahn, saying the activist investor is almost $4 billion short of the cash needed to fund his proposal for a $12-per-share special dividend.

But Icahn said on Tuesday that a major investment bank had indicated its willingness to make available $1.6 billion and that Icahn and his affiliates would provide $2 billion if necessary.

Icahn told cable television network CNBC on May 10 that investment bank Jefferies would contribute to the bridge loan needed to finance his deal.

By the reckoning of the board's special committee, Icahn's prior proposal did not factor in Dell's debt service, expected cash flow shortfalls and various termination and other fees related to the Michael Dell/Silver Lake deal.

In May, Icahn and Southeastern had proposed a deal that would gives shareholders $12 of cash for every share they own, and allow them to keep their stock. In March, Icahn offered $15 per share for 58 percent of Dell.

ToughWriter prototype brings color printing to the cockpit, we go hands-on

AstroMed ToughWriter prototype brings color printing to the cockpit, we go handson

You might be surprised to hear that many current aircraft already have the ability to print documents at 30,000 feet. Long-haul airliners like the Boeing Dreamliner and Airbus A340 ship with a ToughWriter flight deck printer installed and ready to go, but the device has been limited to black and white output, which can be a bit restrictive when it comes to spitting out charts and weather information. Astro-Med, the company behind the cockpit printer currently churning out reports in thousands of commercial, business and military planes, has a spiffy new model on the way. We spotted an early prototype on display at the Paris Air Show this week, and while it's still a ways off from being cockpit-ready, the device works quite well, printing to ZINK paper at about 30 seconds per page, compared to 5 seconds for the monochrome version.

Unlike the printers we're accustomed to using on the ground, a ToughWriter must be installed before an aircraft is certified, so it's really something you need to factor in before the FAA signs off on your plane. In other words, don't expect to simply swap in this new color model once it hits the market. It's also an expensive acquisition -- it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect pricing in the $25,000 range, though that detail has yet to be announced. The version we saw in Paris is very much a work in progress -- it far exceeds the maximum size allowed, and it's heavier than the targeted 10 pounds, too. It does print quite nicely, though, and once engineers manage to squeeze the printer into a smaller housing, it'll likely include AirPrint so pilots can print from their iPads, and possibly Android wireless support, too. Astro-Med reps weren't able to tell us when the color ToughWriter will take to the skies, and considering the certification involved, it could be a few years out. Catch it in action in the gallery below.

Baked Alaska: Crazy Weather Swings from Ice to Fire

In Alaska, houses are built to keep warm air in and cold air out, not the other way around. So with a record-setting heat wave scorching the state, residents are sweltering amidst temperatures soaring past 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius).

Southcentral Alaska hit four all-time highs yesterday (June 17), ranging between 88 F (31 C) in Seward to 94 F (34 C) in Talkeetna, according to the National Weather Service's Alaska forecast office. In the southeastern portion of the state, Skagway, a popular cruise ship port-of-call, reached 83 F (28 C), almost as warm as St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. Just about every part of the state was warmer than average yesterday, the NWS said.

The blazing hot temperatures are just the latest records to fall this year in Alaska. Residents also endured history-making cold temperatures throughout spring and flooding and evacuations caused by the never-ending winter. A mass of Arctic air stuck over the state for weeks this spring was responsible for the chilly weather. It finally fell prey to the warming effects of 18 hours of sunlight at the end of May. [The 9 Hottest Places on Earth]

"Eventually, the sun is going to win out, and once it did, boy, did things change in a hurry," said Michael Lawson, a meteorologist with the NWS Alaska forecast office in Anchorage.

Marine layer loses

While Interior Alaska and towns near the Alaska Range regularly see high temperatures in the summer, extreme heat rarely flares up in Alaska's coastal communities, which are cooled by marine breezes. But a high-pressure ridge parked over Southcentral Alaska is pushing refreshing afternoon sea breezes offshore.

A similar predicament often develops in Southern California, when a high-pressure system keeps the Catalina Eddy offshore, firing up heat waves in beach towns that depend on fog and ocean air for natural air-conditioning.

"It's really much rarer for places in Southcentral Alaska to get as hot as they've been getting," Lawson told LiveScience. "This ridge has been so strong the sea breeze hasn't been getting a chance to cool us down."

The heat wave will continue for the rest of the week, the NWS forecasts. The unusually strong, high-pressure system is intensifying over mainland Alaska, continuing the heat wave. Interior and Southwest Alaska will reach upwards of 90 F (32 C), and Southeast and Southcentral Alaska will see highs in the upper 70s and 80s F (between about 21 and 26 C).

A year without a spring

Yet just a month ago, Alaska was in the grips of a never-ending winter, with late-season snowstorms and record-low temperatures in mid-May. The wild weather swing has wreaked havoc on the annual ice melt along rivers, causing ice jams and flooding. The town of Galena was evacuated late last month due to flooding from an ice dam on the mighty Yukon River. The Nenana Ice Classic, a betting contest on the Nenana River's ice breakup, set a record for the latest-ever crack and cave in of the ice.

"It was an incredibly rapid transition," Lawson told LiveScience. "Literally, our spring was about five days before we jumped into summer-type weather."

A persistent low-pressure trough that remained stuck over the state brought wave after wave of cold Arctic air into Alaska, Lawson said, keeping temperatures lower than normal for most of the winter.

This week's warm weather could bring more flooding from melting snow and ice at higher elevations, the NWS has warned. A red flag fire warning, which signals dangerously dry air and possible strong winds, was also issued over the weekend for much of the state because of drier conditions caused by the hot air mass. A forest fire broke out east of Fairbanks on Monday evening (June 17), prompting temporary road closures. A 30,000-acre fire is also burning in Southwest Alaska.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Alaska was 100 F (37 C) in Ft. Yukon on June 27, 1915.

Small dam construction to reduce greenhouse emissions is causing ecosystem disruption

June 18, 2013 ? Researchers conclude in a new report that a global push for small hydropower projects, supported by various nations and also the Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, may cause unanticipated and potentially significant losses of habitat and biodiversity.

An underlying assumption that small hydropower systems pose fewer ecological concerns than large dams is not universally valid, scientists said in the report. A five-year study, one of the first of its type, concluded that for certain environmental impacts the cumulative damage caused by small dams is worse than their larger counterparts.

The findings were reported by scientists from Oregon State University in the journal Water Resources Research, in work supported by the National Science Foundation.

The conclusions were based on studies of the Nu River system in China but are relevant to national energy policies in many nations or regions -- India, Turkey, Latin America -- that seek to expand hydroelectric power generation. Hydropower is generally favored over coal in many developing areas because it uses a renewable resource and does not contribute to global warming. Also, the social and environmental problems caused by large dam projects have resulted in a recent trend toward increased construction of small dams.

"The Kyoto Protocol, under Clean Development Mechanism, is funding the construction of some of these small hydroelectric projects, with the goal of creating renewable energy that's not based on fossil fuels," said Desiree Tullos, an associate professor in the OSU Department of Biological and Ecological Engineering.

"The energy may be renewable, but this research raises serious questions about whether or not the overall process is sustainable," Tullos said.

"There is damage to streams, fisheries, wildlife, threatened species and communities," she said. "Furthermore, the projects are often located in areas where poverty and illiteracy are high. The benefit to these local people is not always clear, as some of the small hydropower stations are connected to the national grid, indicating that the electricity is being sent outside of the local region.

"The result can be profound and unrecognized impacts."

This study was one of the first of its type to look at the complete range of impacts caused by multiple, small hydroelectric projects, both in a biophysical, ecological and geopolitical basis, and compare them to large dam projects. It focused on the remote Nu River in China's Yunnan Province, where many small dams producing 50 megawatts of power or less are built on tributaries that fall rapidly out of steep mountains. There are already 750,000 dams in China and about one new dam is being built every day, researchers say.

Among the findings of the report as it relates to this region of China:

  • The cumulative amount of energy produced by small hydroelectric projects can be significant, but so can the ecological concerns they raise in this area known to be a "hotspot" of biological diversity.
  • Per megawatt of energy produced, small tributary dams in some cases can have negative environmental impacts that are many times greater than large, main stem dams.
  • Many dams in China are built as part of a state-mandated policy to "Send Western Energy East" toward the larger population and manufacturing centers.
  • Small dams can have significant impacts on habitat loss when a river's entire flow is diverted into channels or pipes, leaving large sections of a river with no water at all.
  • Fish, wildlife, water quality and riparian zones are all affected by water diversion, and changes in nearby land use and habitat fragmentation can lead to further species loss.
  • The cumulative effect on habitat diversity can be 100 times larger for small dams than large dams.
  • Policies encouraging more construction of small dams are often developed at the national or international level, but construction and management of the projects happen at the local level.
  • As a result, mitigation actions and governance structures that would limit social and environmental impacts of small hydropower stations are not adequately implemented.

"One of the things we found generally with small dams is that there was much less oversight and governance with the construction, operation and monitoring of small hydropower," Tullos said. "On the large, main stem dams, people pay attention to what's going on. On a small hydropower project, no one notices if minimum flows are being maintained. Or if a pump breaks, the hydropower station might sit idle for long periods of time."

Researchers said the key finding of the research, contrary to prevailing but unvalidated belief, is that "biophysical impacts of small hydropower may exceed those of large hydropower, particular with regard to habitat and hydrologic change."

Making Immigration Reform All About Rubio

The Gang of Eight that's working on passing an immigration reform law seems more like a gang of seven people who are managing one guy: Marco Rubio. The Florida senator and budding Republican star appears to be both critical to passing the bill and always within inches of blowing it up. While the gang has been highly focused on Rubio ? there was a meeting last week to express "frustration" with him for moving rightward on border security without giving them a heads up,?The Washington Post's Greg Sargent?reports ? Rubio has not been terribly focused on being part of the gang. Since April Rubio has been turning down requests to make public appearances with the other seven senators, Politico's Manu Raju and Carrie Budoff Brown report.?"The members feel like they?ve given him quite a bit of rope," a Democratic aide told Politico. "They just want to make sure it doesn?t end up hanging the deal at the end."

RELATED: Is the Immigration Deal Doomed? It's Not Just Rubio Anymore

In his behind-the-scenes account of the Gang of Eight's negotiations,?The New Yorker's Ryan Lizza?offers some insight into why, earlier this year, all these senators swore Obama could fix Washington if he just went to more dinners with senators and said nice things about them. From Lizza's reporting, you get the impression the immigration bill's passage is impossible without massive amounts of mutual ego stroking among people who despise each other. Sens. John McCain and Chuck Schumer once hated each other because of a joke about Long Island, but they learned to get along over breakfast?pastries. Now McCain says, "The reason why I enjoyed working with Ted Kennedy is because Ted was always good to his word... And so is Chuck." Sen. Bob Menendez says of McCain, "John?s been better than I?m used to... There have been fewer volcanic moments." Schumer said of Sen. Lindsey Graham, "Lindsey is one of the most brilliant politicians I've met... He?s very good at in some places being conciliatory and in some places being real hardlined. With him, it's not Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It's part of the same political personality."

RELATED: The Bipartisan Immigration Plan Is 20 Years of Torture

But the man who gets the most love is Marco Rubio, a conservative who was elected in the Tea Party wave of 2010 and will, if the next two years go as he hopes, be running for president in 2016. "Marco has been really the linchpin on the Republican side," Sen. Jeff Flake says. Menendez says Rubio knows how to "work over the conservative universe" to "neutralize them." Schumer says of Rubio, "He?s the real deal. He is smart, he is substantive. He knows when to compromise and when to hold. And he?s personable." Lizza writes, "An aide to Menendez said that, if the Gang were a group of high-school students, Rubio would be the cool jock and the captain of the football team, with whom everyone wanted to hang out." Is your faith in democracy restored?

RELATED: Look Who's Feuding Now: A Map of Conservative Fingerpointing

Only McCain hinted at the other gangsters' reported frustrations with Rubio. Rubio backed an amendment from Texas Sen. John Cornyn, which requires much tougher standards of border security before undocumented immigrants are allowed to apply for legal status. McCain told? The New Yorker, "Once in a while, you read, 'Rubio?s gonna do this, or do that!' Wait a minute, Marco! Let?s all be together." Schumer told? The New Yorker that the immigration bill needs 70 votes in the Senate to get something passed in the House. But?The Washington Post reports that the way Rubio is trying to get more conservative support might end up killing it entirely. A source told the?Post, "The senators were frustrated because they felt like?Rubio?s mixed signals on the Cornyn amendment were falsely raising expectations among gettable?Republicans about the types of changes that?are?acceptable?on border security." McCain reportedly confronted Rubio over the Cornyn amendment last week. But despite his move to the right,?Rubio's aides aren't afraid conservatives will claim he supports "amnesty," Politico's Alexander Burns and Maggie Haberman report on Monday. It's that now it might look like his colleagues like him too much.?"Rubio?s advisers feel greater anxiety about a different label: Washington. As in, 'Marco?s gone Washington.'"

Detroit on Verge of Bankruptcy, Talks with Creditors Looking Awful ...

This week brought on a nasty credit rating downgrade from Standard & Poor?s for the City of Detroit. Now we have word that Detroit?s Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr has identified plans to a group of creditors, including banks and bondholders, as well as pension managers and unions. The changes, if they are approved and play out, will involve sacrifices by all parties. The long and short of the matter is that Detroit is at risk of becoming the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.

The Detroit News has just outlined its story. Bloomberg TV has reported that the city is suspending payments to unsecured creditors today, starting with a $40 million obligation. Its story is not yet out.

The plan that was outlined includes a cessation of payments to unsecured creditors. Some creditors are even reportedly being asked to take 10 cents or less on the dollar. By our own measurement, this is a nothing less than a credit default. Is it a surprise at all that Detroit is ranked as one of the most dangerous cities in America?

By our take, owning Detroit debt has been a risky venture for some time. Now it is about to get a lot riskier. Even though ten cents on the dollar may just be a starting point, this sets a very bad precedent for what other cities can try to do to get out of debt. Detroit suffers from legacy health care and pension debts that are dwarfing current operational costs. Those same retirees have done nothing wrong to the system individually, but those costs are getting in the way of paying for existing services.

If you think that this is just a Detroit issue, many cities just cannot afford another recession that leaves huge holes in its pension funding as well as lower property tax receipts and lower sales tax receipts. The risks that Meredith Whitney brought up after the recession may have at least some more validity after witnessing this.

Stay tuned. This likely is going to become very ugly. By the way, do not expect financial creditors to just take a pass here and accept whatever offers are being made just because it helps out the city of Detroit and its retirees. The creditors gave the city the money, and they are sure as hell going to want back every penny they can get.

Pope fills key post in Vatican bank overhaul

By Steve Scherer

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis made a key appointment to the Vatican bank on Saturday, part of a clean-up of the institution which has a history of murky financial dealings and is being closely watched by the European money-laundering watchdog.

Francis backed the naming of Monsignor Mario Salvatore Ricca as prelate for the bank, formally known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR), a Vatican statement said.

The prelate reports to the commission of cardinals that oversees the bank, attends board meetings and has privileged access to its famously secret financial activities. The job had been vacant since 2011.

Shortly before resigning, Pope Benedict named Ernst von Freyberg, a German lawyer, to be IOR's new chairman, replacing Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, who was ousted eight months earlier for allegedly neglecting his duties.

Von Freyberg said in May he was making checks on the IOR's 19,000 accounts, mostly held by Vatican employees, charities, priests and nuns.

The 57-year-old Ricca is a member of the Holy See's diplomatic corps and currently runs a number of church-owned residences, including the hotel where Francis has been living since he refused to move into the more opulent papal quarters in the Vatican palace.

Though it was IOR's oversight committee of cardinals, headed by Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone, that officially nominated Ricca, the Vatican announcement made clear that Francis had personally backed the appointment.

The IOR is seeking recognition from the European anti-money laundering committee, Moneyval, that it is fully compliant with international standards on fighting terrorism financing, money laundering and tax evasion.

In July, Moneyval said the IOR still had work to do. Last year, the Vatican detected six possible attempts to use the Holy See to launder money. At least seven have been detected so far this year.

The bank has been dogged by scandal for decades, most notably 31 years ago when it was enmeshed in the bankruptcy of Banco Ambrosiano, then Italy's biggest private bank.

Banco Ambrosiano's chairman, Roberto Calvi, was found hanging from London's Blackfriars Bridge in June 1982. Though initially ruled a suicide by British investigators, an Italian court subsequently ruled that he was murdered. No one has ever been convicted of the crime.

With 114 employees, the IOR had $7.1 billion of assets under management last year, and a profit of 86.6 million euros ($115.52 million), which is used to support Catholic activities around the world. It does not lend money.

Edward Idukas, 28, told his supervisors that he had hurt his back on the job and was too injured to work.

The police department offered to let Idukas do desk duty, but he claimed he was just in too much pain.

Later, sources tipped off the Ventura County District Attorney?s office that he was playing baseball in an adult league while out on disability.

KTLA?S Mary Beth McDade exclusively reported that an investigation was launched and surveillance video showed?Idukas hitting the ball, running, pitching and even sliding into bases.

In addition to being sentenced to jail, Idukas was ordered to pay $120,000 in restitution. He no longer works for Oxnard police.

Sandra Bullock in Early Talks to Join 'Annie' Remake at Sony (Exclusive)

By Jeff Sneider

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Oscar winner Sandra Bullock is in early discussions to play Miss Hannigan in Sony and Overbrook Entertainment's remake of "Annie," two individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

Hannigan, of course, is the mean woman who runs the orphanage where Annie and her friends live. Carol Burnett played the role in the original 1982 film, and Sony has sought to cast an actress with comedic chops and international appeal.

What's especially interesting about Bullock's potential casting is that she initially passed on the role. Now insiders tell TheWrap that Bullock is back at the negotiating table for a family film that may wind up a holiday hit.

Will Smith and Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter are producing Will Gluck's updated musical, which stars Quvenzhane Wallis ("Beasts of the Southern Wild") as the titular orphan, who was originally supposed to be played by Smith's daughter Willow. Jamie Foxx will play NYC mayoral hopeful Benjamin Stacks, a variation on the Daddy Warbucks character.

Sony had no comment, while a representative for Bullock, who is traveling with the actress in Europe, did not reply to numerous requests for comment.

The "Annie" remake is the rare musical designed to appeal to African-American audiences, which also made a sleeper hit out of Bullock's 2009 drama "The Blind Side," which grossed $255 million in the U.S. alone.

Gluck is directing from a script by Emma Thompson and Aline Brosh McKenna that the filmmaker recently revised to suit his vision for the movie, which is expected to start production this fall. "Annie" will hit theaters on Christmas Day 2014.\

Joining Jay-Z and Smith as producers are the latter's Overbrook Entertainment partners James Lassiter and Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as Marcy Media's Jay Brown and Tyran "Ty Ty" Smith. Sony's Andrea Gianatti and Devon Franklin are overseeing for the studio.

Bullock, who is coming off another supporting turn in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," next stars opposite Melissa McCarthy in the buddy cop comedy "The Heat," which 20th Century Fox opens June 28. She's also expected to be in the awards mix this year for Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity," which Warner Bros. will release on October 4.

Bullock is represented by CAA and attorney Clifford Gilbert-Lurie.

Fractal patterns spontaneously emerge during bacterial cell growth

June 11, 2013 ? Scientists have discovered highly asymmetric and branched patterns are the result of physical forces and local instabilities. The research has important implications for understanding biofilms and multicellular systems.

Despite bacterial colonies always forming circular shapes as they grow, their cells form internal divisions which are highly asymmetrical and branched. These fractal (self-similar) patterns are due to the physical forces and local instabilities that are a natural part of bacterial cell growth, a new study reveals. The research, published in the scientific journal ACS Synthetic Biology, has important implications for the emerging field of synthetic biology.

Using a combination of genetic, microscopy and computational tools, Cambridge scientists created a system for examining the development of multicellular bacterial populations. After marking bacteria by inserting genes for different coloured proteins, the researchers used high resolution microscopes to examine the growth of bacterial populations in detail. They discovered that as bacteria grow the cell populations naturally form striking and unexpected branching patterns called fractals. The scientists then used large-scale computer models to explore the patterning process.

They showed that as each bacterium grows in a single direction, lines or files of cells are formed, but these files are unstable to small disturbances. As large numbers of cells push and shove against each other, mechanical instability leads to buckling and folding of cell files. This is repeated as the cells continue to grow and divide, leading to the formation of rafts of aligned cells arranged in self-similar branching patterns, or fractals.

These microscopic fractal patterns emerge spontaneously from physical interactions between the large number of cells within the population. This was tested by looking at the interactions between twin cell populations and a mutant bacterium that has a round shape (where this behaviour is not observed).

Dr Jim Haseloff, from the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Cambridge and lead author of the study, said: "Vivid biological patterns emerge from even subtle interactions. Similar phenomena are seen in the emergence of order in economic, social and political systems.

"The behaviour of large populations can be hard to predict, but the work has resulted in the validation of fast and accurate computer models that provide a test bed for reprogramming of multicellular systems."

Synthetic Biology is a new field that brings engineering principles to biology to reprogram living systems using DNA. It is has the potential to create a new generation of sustainable technologies, with the prospect of new forms of materials and energy produced by biological feedstocks and recycling of waste. As synthetic biologists are starting to reprogram the behaviour of large populations of cells in order to explore new forms of self-organisation and function, this study will have important implications for their research.

Dr Haseloff added: "This is an experimental system that can capture the physics, cellularity and genetics of growth in a simple system -- and which allows a new type of 'emergence in a test-tube' approach.

"Also, it provides a new insight into the way cell populations may interact during the early formation of medically important bacterial populations or biofilms, and produce irregular boundaries for invasive growth and increased surface contact. This could have important implications for understanding the formation of these biofilms, and for engineering new biofilms in biotechnology."

Home Improvement: Laying Tile (on a fireplace, walls, or backsplash ...

?We recently moved into a new home and have been busy re-vamping, tearing down, and re-constructing this/that in our new home.? It?s been fun??but a complete learning process.? If you?d like to see other Home Improvement Projects that we?ve been figuring out (from the help of friends, family, and the ol? internet), be sure to check them out.

***

?

I?m being really flippy-floppy with my posts lately because, well, I?ve been flippy-floppy lately.? I?ll share more of the Teaching Kids to Sew Series next week.? But my house hollered at me this week and asked me to hurry and pretty up a few of her walls.? And I couldn?t resist.

?

So, while we had one of my brothers (thanks Greg!) and Steve?s brother (thanks Joe!) here at different times, we pulled some tiling tips from them??and went crazy tiling a few places in our home.

?

And, let me tell you??if you?ve never tiled anything before, you?re probably a little nervous like I was.? I had only done a few simple tiling projects in the past but I really wanted these to look nice.? So, I was anxious about them.? But holy smokes??..I?m TRIPLE THRILLED with how they turned out!

?

So, let me share what I?ve learned.

IMG_5928

?

?

?

Maybe you have an area that needs a little love??.like our Powder Room Bathroom did.?

?

I used to hate using it because it was just icky, un-loved, and the paint was so sad in there.? Now, I just sit (ahem, excuse me) and enjoy the beautiful colors in there!? Ahhhhhh!? (Yeah, I need to share more pictures of the finished space?.but I haven?t hung a mirror yet.? Or replaced the light fixture.? Or finished the baseboards.? Or hung anything on the walls.? So one day soon?)

bathroom wall tile

?

?

?

And the other tiling project that makes my heart smile??is the fireplace.? The finished mantel (which I?ll also share another day, including a tutorial) turned out so stinkin? beautiful??but the tile definitely finished it off perfectly.? Eeeeeeeh, I couldn?t be one ounce happier with how it all turned out.? Really.

?

And it?s kinda hard to tell, but that glass tile really has some sparkle and texture to it.? The light dances across it once the sun pours through the neighboring window.? And I?m pretty sure that the fact that I laid that tile with my own hands??makes the tile extra gorgeous in my happy little eyes. :)

IMG_5940

?

?

?

Ahhh, Elli.? She kept twirling in front of my camera while I was trying to take photos of the tile.? That girl.? I need to find her a dance teacher in this area.

IMG_5973

?

?

?

This tile is one of the first tile samples I brought home and Steve didn?t care for it.? He called it ?Paris Hilton? tile.? See the random crushed glass tiles in there??? He thought they were too ?glittery?.? I laughed and we took it back (because we both need to love something so permanent, right?).?

?

So, about 13 sample designs later (that we were SURE we?d love) and about 200 pounds of different tiles that we bought and then lugged back to the store after hating it with the paint/lighting/mantel/etc in the room???.we somehow went back to the ?Paris Hilton? tile, after many weeks of searching.? Which is so funny because Steve was so sure he?d hate it, remember?? We looked at it with fresh eyes, imagined it grouted, and now?..neither one of us can keep our hands or eyes off of it.? The tile has the right texture, isn?t too loud or obtrusive, it lets the the new fireplace and mantel have more of the attention, and it adds a little sparkle to the space when the light plays off it.? Okay, I?ll stop.? I?m just way too excited about it all. :)? (You?ll see more of what I mean when you see the finished mantel, the hardwood floors, the wall paint, etc.)

IMG_5946-1

?

?

?

But let me tell you, tiling has made a huge different to these 2 rooms.? And once we finish some things in the kitchen, we?ll be adding some back splash tiles in there.? Can?t wait!?

?

How about you??

Do you have a tiling project in mind??

Are you ready to give it a try?? You should?

IMG_5923

?

?

Let me share what I?ve learned about tiling?

?

Okay?..let?s get started.? Gather your supplies.

IMG_6050

**I also forgot to picture the plastic tile spacers?..but that?s because I didn?t need them.? But you may.

?

?

BUT WAIT!!!? Unless your tiling over a concrete floor, STOP!!!? You need to lay down Cement Board on your sub-floor or screw it into the wall or counter top that you?re tiling.? What?s Cement Board?? It?s a sturdy board that is made of yep, cement, and other fibers.? It is used behind tiling to offer stability, eliminates sagging, and gives an even surface to work on.? The ?pros? I?ve talked to say they wouldn?t ever tile without having it.? So I just do what I?m told! ;)

?

Now, you?ll need to place the Cement Board beneath all your tiling but sometimes there are curves or corners or obstacles to work around.? You could cut smaller puzzle pieces of Cement Board and then fit them all together to cover your surface but whenever possible, consider measuring and sketching the place you need to cut out so that you can have one continuous piece of board.

IMG_4627

?

?

Now, my brother taught us this trick to get pieces out of the center of Cement Board. (Thanks Greg!)

Drill a hole at each corner of the portion you need to remove.

IMG_4631

?

IMG_4645

?

?

Then, drop your jigsaw blade down into the hole and cut out your marked portion to remove.

IMG_4647

?

?

Repeat with any other section that needs to be removed.? Works great!

IMG_4661

**Cement Board is pretty rough on your saw blades.? So be prepared to burn through an extra blade or two while cutting through this stuff.? The good thing, is that blades are only a $1 or so a piece.

?

If you don?t have a jigsaw: you can use a utility knife and cut a line in your board and then place it on the edge of a hard surface and push down on free edge to break it.? This works but can be a little trickier.?

?

Then place your Cement Board in place, to see if it fits.? Make adjustments if necessary.

IMG_4664

?

?

Then screw the board in place.? Having 2 people holding this stuff in place is helpful while getting your first screws in place.

IMG_4669

?

?

The Cement Board that we used on the fireplace had little spots to add screws.? The stuff we used in the bathroom didn?t (we bought it at different stores).? Just keep in mind, you?ll need plenty of screws so that the board lays really flat and doesn?t warp.? Oh, and the screws are special Cement Board screws.? I think they?re made of special Cement Board magic.? Maybe? :)

IMG_4677

?

?

Keep adding your pieces of Cement Board, until your entire surface is covered.

IMG_4680

?

?

Now, it?s time for tiling.? Taping is optional but helps keep excess gunk off your nice surfaces.? I especially liked having that thick paper taped down below, because I knew globs would be falling soon.

IMG_5002

?

IMG_5007

?

?

Okay, back to the tiling supplies.? If you?re laying large tile pieces, you can use a square notched trowel?..but the little triangle notches work better for smaller tile like mine.

IMG_6050

**I also forgot to picture my plastic tile spacers?..but that?s because I didn?t need them.? But you may.

?

?

Also, I?m not sure how strong your muscles are but mine begged me to buy a drill bit mixer.? This saved me a lot of time and energy??.and worked like kitchen beaters to mix up my grout.? Very cool!

IMG_6064

?

?

Then, I noticed you can buy pre-mixed tile adhesive (but not grout), so I jumped all over that too.? It really didn?t cost much more and came in a nice tub that would help save the extra for future tiling projects.? If you?re mixing your own adhesive, it should be the consistency of peanut butter??so keep that in mind as you?re mixing.

IMG_6068

?

?

Okay, so let?s get started with laying that tile.? Depending on what type of tile you use, our methods will vary a bit?..but the whole process is the same.

(Steve?s brother taught me how to do everything from here on out.? He supervised while I tiled.? It was a good match! ;) Thanks again Joe!! )

?

First, grab one of your buckets and fill it half full with water and toss in your sponge.? You will NEED this water?..so grab it first!? And be prepared to dump it and replace it with fresh water many times throughout this process.

?

Now, you need to decide where you want to start laying your tile.? Take notice of where you?d like a nice clean line of tiles to start??and begin there.? Generally, you?ll start where your eye will be drawn to first?..or perhaps the area that is most noticeable.? I started at the bottom because the top edge was kinda hidden.? And then from there, you?ll work in rows?..finishing a row and then beginning another row above (or beneath) it.

?

Use your trowel and slap some adhesive up there on the Cement Board.? Then, just like frosting a cake, try to keep things neat and clean and even, moving your trowel back and forth, and up and down.

IMG_5014

?

?

Apply enough adhesive for a tile sheet or two (if yours are 12 x 12 inches like mine) or more if you?re laying single tiles.? If you apply too much adhesive at once, it will start to dry before you get your tile up there.? So, just do a little at a time.

IMG_5019

?

?

Be sure that there aren?t huge globs of adhesive anywhere?..especially those sneaky edges.? If there?s too much adhesive, once you set your tile and push it on, the adhesive will ooze out and will clog all the space in between the tiles for grouting later on.

IMG_5022

?

?

Eventually you should have a nice layer of adhesive.? I always applied enough for about 1 and half tile sheets.?

IMG_5023

?

?

Now, put your tiles right in place?..adjusting and spacing it just how you need it.

IMG_5027

?

?

Now, use your Grout Float to apply even pressure to your tiles.? Press pretty firmly but not too much or you?ll squeeze all the adhesive out.

IMG_5030

?

IMG_5032

?

?

While you?re working on one row, scrape away any excess adhesive.? Since I was working my way to the left, I would leave extra adhesive to the left because I was working in that direction.? But all the stuff up above would dry before I moved up to that row, so scraping it off kept the Cement Board surface even.

IMG_5033

?

?

After finishing a tile sheet (or a few single tiles), wet your sponge and wipe off any excess adhesive from your tile surface.? Rinse out your sponge and repeat if necessary.? It?s important to keep your tile surfaces clean.?

IMG_5046

**And once your water becomes really mucky, dump it and replace with fresh water.? You?ll have to do this many times to keep things clean.

?

?

Now, if your tiles are heavy and are sliding out of place, add some plastic spacers between your tiles to keep them in place while the adhesive dries.? These spacers come in all sizes??so get what you need, depending on your tiles spaces.? However, I didn?t even use one of these.? I just wanted to show when and where you?d use them.? My tile stayed in place and even? Whew??lucky!? But part of that is that my tiles were pretty forgiving and weren?t super precise with sharp corners or anything.? Yours may be different though.

IMG_5054

?

?

At some point, you?ll probably need to cut your tile to fit around different obstacles.? Place some painters tape on your tile along the edge that you need to cut.? Place the tape on the section you want to keep?..and then cut away what you don?t need.? This will keep your measurements accurate.

IMG_5060

?

?

Now, place your tile in the area you need it and check for accuracy before laying down more adhesive.

IMG_5065

?

?

Then go ahead and add your layer of adhesive and place your tile where it needs to go.? Repeat the above process of scraping away excess adhesive from, wiping with a sponge, etc.

IMG_5067

?

?

And again, if you need to add spacers between each sheet of tiles, go ahead and do so before everything dries.

IMG_5072

?

?

And then let everything dry in place for 24-48 hours?..or whatever your product says on the label.

?

Now, it?s time to grout.

?

Again, you need to fill up your bucket with clean water and keep it handy.? You?ll dump it and replace it many times throughout this process as well.

?

Mix up your grout, per your product?s instructions.? You don?t want it too stiff and I actually preferred it to be slightly thinner than the adhesive.? I mentioned above that the adhesive should be like the consistency of peanut butter??I liked the grout a little thinner than that.? (Just because it seemed easier to get into all the cracks a little thinner.)? Then grab a blob of grout with your Grout Float and start from the bottom and push it into all the cracks as you slide it upwards.?

IMG_5078

?

IMG_5085

?

?

Then use your float and slide it across the surface pushing from the left, then the right, then down from the top.? This will just help work it into all the cracks.? If you have blobs fall down below, just scoop the back up, return them to the bucket, and continue on.? It?s a little messy but you?ll get better and better as you go.

IMG_5086

?

?

Once you finish grouting like a 2 x 4 square foot area, wet your sponge and wipe away any excess grout from the tiles and the surfaces around your tile.? Rinse your sponge and repeat a few times.? And replace your water with fresh water once your bucket gets too clouded and mucky.

IMG_5093

?

?

Then repeat, repeat, and repeat some more?..until all of your tiles are grouted.

?

Then get new water in your bucket and make one final wipe over the tiles.? Wipe a few feet of tile, rinse your sponge, repeat, and repeat again.? This final wipe will help assure you get all the final grit off the surface of your tile.

?

Then, allow your grout to dry for a couple hours and then wipe your tile surface with a dry cloth or paper towels to help shine them up.

IMG_5095

?

?

Let your grout completely dry (check the label of your grout brand to see how long this takes) and then caulk all of the edges.? Your grout brand probably offers a matching caulk color, so that you can help blend the caulk into your tile cracks.? However, mine didn?t.? Luckily, my grout was a light grey and the fireplace was white?..so I just used white and tried to wipe out the excess from the tile cracks.? When caulking, use your finger (or a caulking tool) to press your caulk into the cracks and to remove the excess.? Have lots of wet paper towels (or a smaller sponge) ready to wipe the other surfaces around the tile, including the tile.? Do this right away because caulk dries pretty quickly.?

caulking tile

Caulking will help hide uneven edges and will also help your tile job to last longer??so don?t skip it.? Just be patient with it and wet your finger or your caulk tool) with water as your pushing it into cracks.? Water glides right over it while it?s wet?..so you?ll notice a huge difference if you keep things wet.

?

Also, be sure you?re using PAINTABLE caulk so that you can touch up any surfaces that butts up against your tile/caulking project.

?

?

And at last??YOU?RE DONE!!!!!? So worth it, right???

IMG_5923

?

?

Let me know what tiling projects you?re thinking of doing.

?

And good luck!

-Ashley
