CALGARY ? The war of words may have ceased, but the two parties embroiled in a dispute over redeveloping the Shaw-Nee Slopes Golf Course remain far apart on the finer details.
?There remains a fair gulf between the community?s and the developer?s positions,? said Grant Galpin, the consultant representing the Shawnee-Evergreen community.
?There?s plenty of good understanding,? he said. ?But practically speaking the developer hasn?t made any significant change whatsoever in their plans that would address what the community has raised.?
Much of that ?good understanding? can be attributed to a mediator brought in by the city last fall to soothe tempers and re-start once poisonous negotiations between the community and developer Geo-Energy Enterprises.
The developer plans to build more than 1,400 homes on the now-closed Shaw-Nee Slopes Golf Course in the city?s southwest.
It?s a plan that left many residents upset that their lifestyle would be ruined by high-density development, traffic congestion and a lack of recreational space.
Still, despite weeks of more civil meetings facilitated by the mediator, many issues need to be resolved.
Hoping to keep the negotiations on track, Ward 13 Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart asked during Monday?s council meeting for the matter to be deferred until February. Council approved the request.
?I don?t want to do anything that?s going to undermine this discussion. It took us a lot just to get us back on track here and get people to the table,? she said.
